Problem Statement

The client launched a large-scale program to modernize the Fast Serving Layer for its critical reporting systems, MicroStrategy and Tableau.

To improve performance and scalability, they planned a migration from Exasol to AWS Redshift.

Though intended as a re-platforming to AWS Redshift and conversion from Exasol and Lua, it required a deep understanding of data structures, object relationships, and reports, along with maximum automation for a smooth transition.

Solution Proposed

  • Evaluation and Transition Planning: EPAM used migVisor to assess Exasol and related platforms, mapping architecture, data relationships, and workloads. This defined the target architecture and migration strategy.
  • Target Architecture & Migration Strategy: Based on migVisor insights, EPAM designed a target architecture for Redshift and the Data Lake and created a migration plan focusing on workload prioritization and dependency management.
  • Migration Execution: Exasol workloads were migrated to Redshift using migVisor Converter, automating the transformation logic. BI reports were redirected to Redshift, and data replication ensured continuous synchronization between Redshift and the Data Lake.
  • Post-Migration Validation: migVisor Reconciler validated data accuracy, and a detailed migration runbook outlined the process, timelines, and roles for a successful release.
